How Many Boxes Do I Need for a 3 Bedroom House Move in 2023-24?

Packing could be the most challenging part of any move. There are a lot of things to consider when packing for a move. Which items do you take with you to your new home or which ones to let go of? One important part of any Home Removals is categorizing your stuff into what is important and clutter. Once you let go of the clutter that you have accumulated over the years, you will find it easier to pack your items for your move. Nevertheless, you still have a major decision to make, “How many boxes will you need for your packing?” The number of boxes that you will need for packing all your stuff will depend on different factors.

The Square Footage of Your Home. One factor in determining the number of boxes you will be needing is the size of your home. If you have a large home, you will need a lot of boxes. You will need more boxes if you are moving to a 3-bedroom house compared to a studio-type apartment. However, the square footage of your house will not give you an accurate number of boxes needed for your move since the number will depend greatly on how you utilize the square footage of your home.

The Number of Bedrooms and Residents. The number of boxes you will need will also depend greatly on the number of rooms and residents of your home. One room of your home can fill up to 40 to 50 boxes. Likewise, the number of boxes will also depend on the number of persons included in the move since each person will have his or her sets of clothes and personal items. When estimating the number of boxes according to rooms, it is best to include areas such as the garage, attic, and basement and consider them in the number of rooms.

The Number of Years Stayed in the House. Another factor determining the number of boxes you will need is the length of stay you had in your house. Chances are, the longer you have stayed in the house, the more stuff you have accumulated over the years. This stuff may include travel souvenirs, gifts from relatives, sets of clothing, and other items that you may have bought or received over the years. If you want to keep all your items, you should be ready to shell out more cash for additional boxes.

Your Lifestyle. Your lifestyle will determine how you utilize the square footage of your home. If you are a minimalist, you can reduce the number of boxes you will need from the 40 to 50 boxes per room estimate. However, if you have a hoarding tendency or have sentimental attachments to all of your things, then add more boxes for your move.

The Types of Boxes. How many boxes will you need to move to a 3-bedroom house will largely depend on the type of boxes you will use. Moving Boxes usually come in four standard sizes: small, medium, large, and extra-large.

  • Small Boxes. Small boxes will usually have the capacity to hold 1.5 cubic feet of stuff. This type of box is ideal for transporting small items such as books or bottles of wine. However, it is important to plan when you pack small boxes with books to not be too heavy for your move.
  • Medium Boxes. Medium boxes may come in 2 or 3 cubic feet capacity. These boxes are the most common boxes used for moving and can be used to move everything that will fit inside them.
  • Large Boxes. Large boxes can have a carrying capacity of up to 3.5 cubic feet. These boxes are ideal for packing a large number of light items such as clothes and linen. However, large boxes are not as sturdy as the smaller-sized boxes, so it is best not to put heavy objects in large boxes.
  • Extra-Large Boxes. Although these boxes are not common, they do exist if you need them.

The number of boxes you will need to move a 3-bedroom house will depend on how large your house is, the number of residents joining the move, your lifestyle, and the type of boxes you will use. For a final note, when packing, it is best to pack heavier items into small boxes and pack lighter items in larger boxes.
